Celebrating the Heart of Our Family: Mother’s Day & Finding My Voice

Happy Mother’s Day to all the incredible moms out there, especially to my amazing wife, Brandy. For all the years I’ve known her, she has been the greatest mother I know. I’ve never been a big fan of getting cards for these holidays, so I figured I’d do something more meaningful this year and write this instead.
Brandy and I are, in many ways, complete opposites. This has always been apparent to our kids growing up. While the fundamental love and care are always there from both parents, the way we express it differs. Brandy has always been the comforting, gentle, and nurturing soul in our family, the one who instinctively takes care of everyone. I, on the other hand, tend to be more analytical in my approach to situations within our family. In fact, I sometimes wonder if it must feel to Brandy like she’s raised three children instead of two!
We all have our strengths and weaknesses, and one of my ongoing challenges has been expressing myself clearly, especially on an emotional level. I believe this is where the creative outlet of making our videos comes in. It’s like scratching an itch, providing a space where I can express myself in ways that feel difficult for me in everyday interactions. In essence, isn’t that what much of art is – creative expression? Well, some of us, myself included, just aren’t naturally gifted at verbalizing our feelings. Brandy and I couldn’t be more different in this regard, and yet, I believe that difference is one of the great strengths of our relationship. While I might struggle to articulate things perfectly, Brandy, thankfully, has learned to understand me over our many years together. That’s a cornerstone of marriage, isn’t it? Learning each other’s languages, spoken and unspoken.
I think some couples reach a point where they focus on the things they dislike about their partner and ultimately decide they can’t continue. Fortunately, that has never been our experience. Because marriage, at its core, is about continuous effort. It requires care, a willingness to try and become a better version of yourself for your partner and your family. It’s a constant work in progress. And when we receive comments on our videos about the channel feeling ‘real,’ it’s because we strive to keep it that way. We often leave in moments that others might cut out because those are the genuine, everyday occurrences of life. And some of them are just hilarious.
So, on this Mother’s Day, beyond just celebrating the idea of motherhood, I want to specifically acknowledge and appreciate Brandy for the incredible mother she is. Her inherent ability to care, to nurture, and to be the comforting heart of our family is something I cherish deeply. She creates a space of love and support that allows all of us to thrive. While I might express my appreciation in different ways, my admiration for her role as a mother is immense and strong. She is the greatest mother I know, and I’m incredibly grateful to be on this journey of life and parenthood with her.
Happy Mother’s Day, Brandy. Thank you for being you, for being the amazing mother to our children, and for being the heart of our family’s adventures, both on and off screen.
